About

Early Life & Resilience
Born as an identical twin on September 23, 1979, in the Bronx, NY, Shanikka Gadson-Harris is a testament to resilience and purpose. Raised in the foster care system and becoming a young mother, she overcame extraordinary challenges, supporting her siblings and cousins while forging her own path. After moving to Salisbury, NC in the late 1990s, she transformed adversity into achievement: from high school dropout to becoming the first college graduate in her family, later earning a master’s degree in criminal justice.

Family & Community Roots
Shanikka is deeply rooted in family, service, and leadership. She is a devoted wife to her husband, Demarte Harris, and together they have raised five children, four graduates of Rowan-Salisbury schools; and are proud grandparents of two. Her passion for family extends into her passion for community, where she pours her time and energy into helping others thrive.

Leadership & Service
In Salisbury, Shanikka serves as Second Vice Chair of the African American Caucus for the Rowan County Democratic Party, a member of the Human Relations Commission, the Business Advisory Council, and the Small Business Minority Council. She is a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and has long served as Administrator of Love Christian Center Church.

Entrepreneur & Advocate
Alongside her late twin sister, Shakeena Gadson-McCombs, Shanikka co-founded TwinBlitz, a community-focused salon and nonprofit effort. For over 14 years, TwinBlitz has provided free back-to-school haircuts, styles, backpacks, and supplies to thousands of local children. In 2025, the initiative partnered with Salisbury Parks & Recreation to serve more than 1,600 community members, helping young people return to school with confidence and dignity.
